Our take: Worth a look if you run a store or content site with a large backlog of unlabeled images and want API or CSV workflows. Skip it if you only have a few images a month, because the free plan may already cover you, or if you need clear per-image credit costs before paying.

What we like

  • Bulk batches of up to 5,000 images with automatic retries
  • Alt text in 30 languages with four writing styles
  • CSV import and export, page scraper, REST API and webhooks
  • Shows exact credit cost before a run and blocks it if your balance falls short

Watch out for

  • Monthly credit caps are modest, starting at 500 on the $49 tier
  • The listing doesn't say how many credits one image costs
  • A free plan with 26 credits and all features weakens the case for the cheapest tier

Picture an online store with a few thousand product photos, and every alt text field is blank. Search engines can’t read those images, screen reader users hear nothing useful, and nobody on the team wants to type 3,000 descriptions by hand. That’s the job AltGen is built for.

AltGen product screen

It’s a narrow tool, and I mean that kindly. AltGen does one thing: it looks at an image with a vision AI model and writes alt text for it. The AppSumo listing positions it as an alternative to Jasper and ChatGPT, which is a stretch. Those are general writing tools. This is a single-purpose batch processor for image descriptions.

How the writing is controlled

Before a run, you pick three things: an industry preset, a writing style and the target languages. The listing names four styles, Terse, Concise, Direct and Elaborated. They run from minimal keywords to full contextual descriptions.

That range matters more than it sounds. A product photo on a category page probably wants something short. A hero image in a long article might deserve a fuller sentence. Being able to choose per batch is useful.

Language support is 30, including English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. If you sell into several markets, that’s a real time saver. The listing doesn’t say which vision model sits underneath, and it doesn’t show sample output. So we can’t judge how good the descriptions are. You’d want to run a handful of your own images through the free plan before spending anything.

Getting images in and results out

The intake options are the strongest part of the listing. You can upload files, paste URLs, import a CSV, or point the scraper at a page and let it find every image on it. Batches can hold up to 5,000 images, and failed items are retried automatically.

The CSV flow has three steps: upload, review, configure. There’s a column format guide, and invalid rows are flagged before processing starts. That’s a small detail, but anyone who has had a 4,000-row import die on row 3,812 will appreciate it.

Results land in one searchable library. You can filter by status, style, preset or language, and retry a single failed image without redoing the batch. Completed results export back to CSV.

For developers, there’s a REST API to generate, list, update and retry alt text, plus scoped API keys and webhooks. So if your product catalog lives in a database or a headless CMS, you can wire AltGen into it rather than shuffling files by hand. The listing doesn’t mention any native plugin for Shopify, WordPress or similar. Integrations are listed as API and webhooks only, so expect to do some setup yourself.

AltGen features at a glance

The credit system is the whole deal

Here’s where I slow down. Every lifetime tier comes with the same features. The only difference is monthly credits, and the listing gives these as 13,500, 10,000, 7,500, 5,000, 3,000, 1,500 and 500. Read in order against the prices, that looks like this:

  • Tier 1, $49: 500 credits a month
  • Tier 2, $98: 1,500
  • Tier 3, $147: 3,000
  • Tier 4, $196: 5,000
  • Tier 5, $245: 7,500
  • Tier 6, $294: 10,000
  • Tier 7, $343: 13,500

The listing doesn’t label credits by tier, so confirm that mapping on the checkout page.

The bigger gap is that the listing never says how many credits one image costs. It says AltGen shows the exact cost upfront and stops a run if your balance can’t cover it. That’s a sensible safeguard. But it doesn’t tell you whether one image is one credit, or whether three languages on one image triples the cost, or whether a longer style costs more. It also doesn’t say whether unused credits roll over. Without those answers you can’t work out what 500 credits actually buys.

So don’t buy on the assumption that credits equal images. Ask the seller, or read the pricing page, before you commit.

What the free plan does to the math

The listing says there’s a Free plan with 26 credits a month. It includes all languages, bulk upload, CSV import, the page scraper, API access and webhooks.

That’s good news for testing. You can try the whole workflow without paying. It’s less good news for the $49 tier, which gives you 500 monthly credits and the same features. You’re paying for volume, nothing else. If your needs are around a few dozen images a month, the free plan may be enough and a lifetime deal is pointless.

The real argument for buying is a backlog. If you have thousands of images to label, a higher tier lets you work through them over a few months for a one-time fee. The lifetime price falls well below the listed prices (for example $343 against $1,908 at the top tier), though those list prices are the vendor’s own and tell you little about real market value.

Terms are standard for AppSumo. You must redeem codes within 60 days of purchase, and you get all future plan updates. You can stack up to 7 codes, though each tier is already priced as its own step. Compare stacking against simply taking a higher tier before you decide.

Who should pass

Skip it if you have a small site with a modest image count. Fixing a few hundred alt texts is a one-afternoon job, and the free plan’s 26 credits might help you test the output anyway.

Skip it too if you want a full SEO suite. AltGen doesn’t claim to do keyword research, audits or content writing. It also doesn’t say anything about plugins for common platforms, so a non-technical store owner without a developer may find the CSV route clumsy.

Be careful if you need certainty about quality. There’s no product video, no sample output in the listing, and no word on how long the company has been operating or what its roadmap looks like. A lifetime deal is only as good as the company that stays around to honor it, and the listing gives us little to judge that by.

AltGen price and limits

For developers and ecommerce teams with a real backlog, the mix of CSV import, a 5,000-image batch limit, 30 languages and an open API is a sensible fit. Start free, run your own images through it, and check the per-image credit cost before choosing a tier. If the numbers hold up, a mid-range tier is where I’d look first. The $49 entry tier only makes sense if 500 credits really does cover a month of your work.
